Your Complete Resource for Container Basics, Sizes, and Uses

At Containers Solution, understanding the weight requirements of your container is essential to its safe and effective operation. The three crucial weight measurements that are usually shown next to the doors on every shipping container are broken down here:
1. Tare Weight
  • The weight of the empty container (only the steel box)
  • Before adding anything, consider this to be the “base weight.”
2. Payload Capacity (Net Weight)
  • The maximum amount of cargo that your container can securely hold
  • You can put this inside.
3. Gross Weight
  • The total weight permitted (maximum cargo plus container)
  • Never exceed this number – it’s your safety limit
This is important because:
✔It guarantees safe transportation
✔Avoids fines for overloading.
✔Assists with loading logistics planning

Weight ratings are clearly marked on all of our containers, so you may load with confidence. Do you need assistance figuring out capacity for a particular project? Our professionals are only a phone call away.

Pro Tip: Before making any modifications to containers, always check these ratings because structural changes may have an impact on weight restrictions!

Standard Container Sizes & Specifications

Standard Sizes:

  • 8″ wide, 20″ and 40″ long (perfect for most shipping and storage requirements)

Options for Height:

  • Standard: 8’6″ clearance

  • High Cube: An additional 12 inches (9’6″) in height for more volume

Space-Saving Solutions:

  • Newly constructed, compact containers made for confined spaces

Understanding Shipping Container Dimensions

Wall Construction:

  • With corrugations that are 1″ (25mm) deep, the interior width is reduced by a total of 2″ (50mm).

Doors:

  • corrugated panels with a thickness of 2 inches (50 mm), reducing interior length by approximately 3 inches (75 mm)

Height Differences:

  • The most obvious difference between the interior and external measurements

Floor specifications:

  • 6″ (150mm) underfloor clearance and 1.1″ (27mm) thickness

Our containers maximize usable space while preserving structural integrity:

Interior width: around 7’10” (2.39 m)

Door height: Because of the 4″ (100mm) top rail, it is usually 7’6″ (2.28m).

Important Notes: • Dimensions and weight are affected by custom modifications • Measurements may differ somewhat between units • These specifications only apply to conventional containers (not specialized housing units)
